Developing NAPLAN Writing Skills through the Curriculum

Gain the clarity, confidence, and tools to:

We will demonstrate, using examples, how focusing on continuous skill development, informed by NAPLAN and the curriculum can achieve individual student and whole school goals.

When NAPLAN data is viewed through a curriculum lens, it becomes a valuable and actionable resource. It allows school leaders and teachers to target real student needs, not just improve ‘some’ aspects of test performance, but strengthen their overall writing skills.

This workshop goes further than just explaining report structure and data interpretation

The wins…

  • Teach NAPLAN skills, through the curriculum, at every level.
  • Create specific, actionable, and achievable whole school writing goals. No more estimating % of growth.

The curveballs…

  • A NAPLAN score alone won’t tell teachers what their students need to learn next.
  • Each NAPLAN skill and corresponding score is weighted differently and does not align with the curriculum. See image above.

The traps…

  • Teaching against the NAPLAN criteria narrows the curriculum and overlooks individual student needs.

Workshop Outline

PART 1 – How to effectively unpack and use your schools NAPLAN writing data.

We’ll begin by walking you through what data is available and how school leaders and teaching staff can best use it.

NAPLAN data is a valuable resource for schools, but it’s often underutilised.  We will clearly demonstrate how to take full advantage of the data available for writing.

PART 2 – Translating NAPLAN Data into Effective Curriculum Planning
  • We will illustrate, with examples, how to identify individual, student & cohort needs from NAPLAN data and link these to the curriculum.
  • How to set realistic and attainable whole school writing goals.

When implemented successfully, this results in students consistently achieving expected learning growth, as reflected in both annual reporting and 2-year NAPLAN assessments.
